A new clinical trial published in the Journal of Oral Rehabilitation demonstrates that an 'Individualised Mouth and Oral Health Treatment Plan (MOHIT)' is significantly more effective than routine care for patients with brain injuries. The research emphasizes that combining professional planning with advanced tools like suction toothbrushes is key to superior clinical outcomes.

The trial, conducted at the Hammel Neurorehabilitation Centre, focused on patients with brain injuries resulting from trauma, stroke, or surgery. Recognizing that standard care often falls short for those with complex needs, the researchers developed an 'Individualised Mouth and Oral Health Treatment Plan (MOHIT)'.

The study highlights that success in oral care depends heavily on the tools used. The use of suction electric toothbrushes equipped with LED lighting was a game-changer.

  • Enhanced Visibility: The LED light provides caregivers with a clear view of the oral cavity, ensuring no area is neglected.

  • Aspiration Prevention: The built-in suction function is vital for patient safety, effectively removing fluids that could otherwise lead to lung complications.

The findings, published in the Journal of Oral Rehabilitation, were conclusive:

  1. 19% Less Gum Bleeding: The MOHIT group showed a 19.11% greater reduction in Bleeding on Probing (BOP) compared to the routine care group.
  2. Cleaner Oral Environment: Significant improvements were also measured in plaque levels and tongue coating.
  3. Risk Mitigation: The integration of suction technology proved vital in preventing aspiration pneumonia by effectively managing oral fluids.

"Personalised care plans are not an option; they are a requirement for effective recovery," says the research team. By combining evidence-based planning with specialized equipment, healthcare providers and caregivers can significantly improve the quality of life for patients.
